Four East Valley Cities Rank Among America’s Happiest in 2026
If you already call the East Valley home, this may not come as a surprise—but it’s always wonderful to see our local communities receive national recognition.
Scottsdale, Gilbert, Chandler, and Tempe all ranked among the 20 Happiest Cities in America for 2026, according to a recent WalletHub study. The study compared 182 of the largest U.S. cities using 29 indicators across three categories: emotional and physical well-being, income and employment, and community and environment.
Here’s where our East Valley cities landed:
- 3 – Scottsdale
- 9 – Gilbert
- 14 – Chandler
- 20 – Tempe
Happiness is personal, of course, but these rankings reflect many of the qualities I see buyers and homeowners value every day—access to outdoor recreation, strong local economies, welcoming gathering places, and communities that offer plenty of ways to feel connected.
Scottsdale: Healthy, Active, and Connected to the Outdoors
Scottsdale earned the highest Arizona ranking at No. 3 nationwide. WalletHub noted that more than 88% of Scottsdale adults reported being in good or better health, while nearly 87% participate in physical activities.
That active lifestyle is easy to understand when you consider the city’s access to recreation. Scottsdale offers more than 1,100 acres of park space, along with an extensive trail network that includes approximately 220 miles of trails within the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
Beyond the outdoors, Scottsdale brings together distinctive neighborhoods, arts and cultural experiences, shopping, dining, and the natural beauty of the Sonoran Desert.
Gilbert: Community Appeal with Plenty of Room to Explore
Gilbert placed No. 9 overall, including No. 6 for community and environment. It also ranked fourth nationally for sports participation.
Residents have access to more than 600 acres of open space, neighborhood and regional parks, and destinations such as the Riparian Preserve and Gilbert Regional Park. The Heritage District adds locally owned restaurants, entertainment, gathering places, and the iconic Water Tower Plaza.
As someone who works extensively throughout Gilbert, I see firsthand why so many people are drawn to its combination of residential communities, outdoor amenities, and lively local destinations.
Chandler: Recreation Meets Economic Opportunity
Coming in at No. 14, Chandler also earned the No. 10 ranking for community and environment.
The city offers more than 60 parks, along with trails, sports facilities, recreation programs, and community gathering spaces. Downtown Chandler adds restaurants, entertainment, public art, and events, while the city’s five designated employment and business districts support a broad and evolving local economy.
Chandler continues to offer a thoughtful balance of established neighborhoods, everyday conveniences, recreational opportunities, and access to major employment centers.
Tempe: Energetic, Connected, and Full of Possibility
Tempe rounded out the East Valley’s Top 20 showing at No. 20 nationally. It performed especially well in the income and employment category, ranking No. 15.
Tempe offers a distinctive mix of established neighborhoods, employment centers, cultural attractions, and recreation. The city has more than 50 neighborhood and community parks, while the 2.5-mile Tempe Town Lake features pathways on both sides for walking, jogging, and cycling.
Its central location within Greater Phoenix, access to major transportation routes, and growing innovation and technology sectors all contribute to Tempe’s energetic character.
Four Cities, One East Valley We’re Proud to Call Home
Each city has its own personality. Scottsdale offers desert recreation and a polished urban lifestyle. Gilbert blends open spaces with vibrant community destinations. Chandler combines neighborhood amenities with a strong business presence. Tempe delivers energy, connectivity, and access to recreation and employment.
Together, they reflect so much of what makes the East Valley special: sunshine, opportunity, outdoor living, and communities that continue to evolve while maintaining their own distinct character.
Helping people find their place within these communities is one of the things I enjoy most about real estate. Whether you’re considering a move, exploring a different East Valley community, or simply curious about your home’s current value, I’m always happy to be a resource and help you understand your options.
